General Experience

After a degree in medieval & modern history, I worked in public libraries for 20 years, most of them as a chartered librarian. I catalogued using Dewey Decimal Classification for 3 years.

While training in indexing, I helped adult learners to get online or to achieve CLAiT and ECDL using MS Office programs.

I became a qualified indexer in 2011 and then took a proofreading course with The Publishing Training Centre.

For five years until 2016 I was part-time clerk to a parish council. Birdwatching and family history have replaced village cricket as my main pastimes. And I still help adults with IT issues in a voluntary capacity.

Available for indexing all year, except September.

Genealogy/Family History

I have been researching family histories since 2010. I keep up-to-date with developments in the field largely through membership of five family history societies. Since 2017, I have had several articles published in The Greenwood Tree (journal of the Somerset and Dorset FHS), Dorset Family History Society Journal and The Manchester Genealogist (journal of the Manchester & Lancashire FHS).

Natural History

Besides my main interest in birds, I record butterflies, dragonflies and mammals for Norfolk and Suffolk county recorders. I have volunteered for the Broads Authority and as a part-time seasonal warden for Friends of Horsey Seals, looking after the grey seal colony on Norfolk’s east coast.
Index to The Suffolk Argus Vols 50-88. Published on website since Sept 2022. This is the newsletter of the Suffolk branch of Butterfly Conservation

Ornithology

Besides regular recording of birds for the BTO via BirdTrack, I make the monthly WEBs count at Lound Lakes. I have been volunteering at the Little Terns colonies at Great Yarmouth/ Winterton/ Eccles-on-Sea since 2005.
